Annual report 2019

Dear Readers,

As ad-interim Director General of OSIM, I have the honour of presenting a brief review of the year 2019, hoping to offer you a comprehensible overview of the activity of our specialists and of the efforts they make every day for accomplishing the objectives we set.

This Report is at the same time an appraisal of their professionalism acquired in years and years of study, devotion and experience in the industrial property field.

In 2019 OSIM examined a total number of 13980 applications for protection titles, granted 401 patents, 26 supplementary protection certificates, registered 38 utility models, 8005 trademarks and 3009 trademark renewals and examined 729 designs comprised in 271 design applications. 4329 European patents were validated in Romania, the total number of validated European patents reaching 23410 at the end of the year.

A comparative analysis of figures may reveal certain decreasing trends in some areas, such as the number of filed applications, which is not a surprise considering the close connection between OSIM activity and the development of the Romanian economy.

OSIM continued to develop cooperation with international, regional and European intellectual property organizations, our specialists taking active part, on behalf of Romania, in the meetings organized by such institutions.

Training sessions for OSIM examiners were organized in Romania along with our partners from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and, in a lifelong learning and improvement perspective, our examiners also attended the events organized by other European industrial property offices.

The most important event of 2019 was the conference “Future of Industrial Property in Europe: challenges and perspectives” organized during the Romania’s holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The conference enjoyed the participation of 350 foreign guests, top specialists in the field of industrial property.

Throughout the year, the specialists’ attention was focused on the field of patents in a series of events, one of the most important being the EPO Annual Patent Information Conference (EPOPIC 2019) organized in Bucharest. The event addressed to all the experts involved in the patent information field, industrial property attorneys, service providers in the patent information field and specialists within industrial property offices worldwide.

landmark event in the field of trademarks was the seminar entitled “All about Marks – Legislative Updates with Impact on Your Business!” organized by OSIM, which gathered an important number of industrial property specialists.

The activity of industrial property protection promotion has been kept up at the same high standards as in the preceding years, having our specialists, examiners and experts present in various events organized in the academic and business environment, as well, and disseminating information via the network of Regional Centres PATLIB Romania.

Consequently, I can safely say that 2019 was a year full of important events, during which the industrial property attorneys, the specialists within the Regional Centres PATLIB, our partners working in industrial property rights enforcement and the 234 OSIM employees brought their contribution to the development of industrial property culture.
